The Appalachian Camino will take place on
Sunday, June 23 – Friday, June 28, 2019

 

What is the Appalachian Camino?

This is a week-long hike created to reflect the Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania invites you to Walk the Way of Love across sections of the Appalachian Trail in southern Pennsylvania.

We have posted the 2019 Appalachian Camino Itinerary for Days 1 & 2 below.

Day 1 – Sunday, June 23, 6:15 am
Week Hikers will meet at St. Andrew’s in the Valley, 4620 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg 17331.

7:30 am Day Hikers will meet at Trinity Episcopal, 82 S 2nd Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201 parking lot.
7:45 am Depart to Calvary Chapel, 13318 Mentzer Gap Road, Beartown, arriving at 8:30 am.

9:00 am Worship in Calvary Chapel. Afterward, Group Picture!
Brief Overview of the Days Hike and Stopping Points. Hit the Trail at 10:00 am!
– Appalachian Camino Start: Mentzer Gap Road, Mackie Run
Rest Area/Stopping Points:
Stop 1 – Antietam Shelter – 4.3mi.
12 Noon approximately Rattlesnake Run Road. A.T. Parking

End Day 1 Hike: PA – 233 Intersection – 10.8mi. – Parking area north of the intersection of

Sign-In on Amy’s Clipboard as you Exit the trail with your daypack. We are not losing anyone.
I am calculating time along the trail based on a 2 mile/hour speed. Some will go faster, and some will go slower.
Remember your Time Entering the trail and add 1hr for every 2miles you walk.
Arriving at 4 pm.

Overnight Day 1: Trinity Episcopal Church, Chambersburg, 58 S 2nd St,

Upon arrival the first group to arrive off the trail will help to unload the trailer, spreading bags onto the ground for easy identifying.
Dinner: 6 pm

Evening Eucharist: 7:30 pm – Each evening we will have worship and fellowship together in a relaxed, nurturing atmosphere on the grounds of the Church or in the parish hall depending on the weather and bugs. The rest of the evening is free time. Rest Well.

Day 2 – Monday, June 24
6:00 am – Wake up, clean up, pack your gear and load into the trailer before heading to breakfast.
6:45 – 7:30 am – Enjoy Breakfast.
Make yourself a lunch, pack your daypack with supplies you need for the trail.
7:30 – Start loading into the shuttles.
7:35 am – leave for Trailhead.
8:00 am – arriving Caledonia State Park, 101 Pine Grove Rd, Fayetteville, PA 17222
Meanwhile: at St Andrews Episcopal Church, 206 E Burd St, Shippensburg, PA 17257
7:20 am – Day Hikers are parking their cars at the far end of the parking lot in front of the Shippensburg Home. Leave the spaces closest to the doors for daily visitors and staff.
7:30 am – Load Shuttle
7:40 am – Leave for Trailhead.
8:00 am – arriving Caledonia State Park, 101 Pine Grove Rd, Fayetteville, PA 17222

8:05 – Overview of the Days Hike and Stopping Points
8:10 – 8:30 – Morning Worship – Afterwards, Group Picture!
Hit the Trail at 8:30 am!

Stop 1 – Ridge Road & Sandy Sod Run – 4.0mi. – Parking Area along the road.

Stop 2 – Canada Hollow & Means Hollow Rd. Intersection – 7.2mi. – Parking along road.
12 noon – approximately
End Day 2 Hike: Shippensburg Road Parking Area – 11.3mi. (Total 22.3 miles)
2:00 – 2:30 pm approximately A.T. Parking

Shippensburg-Arendtsville Road (Big Flat)
Overnight Day 2: St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 206 E. Burd Street, Shippensburg, PA
Arriving at 3 pm approximately. (first hikers) 17257
5 pm Dinner: The parishioners of Shippensburg are preparing the evening meal, they may need our help.
7 pm Evening Eucharist: Each evening we will have worship and fellowship together in a relaxed, atmosphere
on the grounds of the Church or in the parish hall depending on the weather and bugs.

Day 3 – Tuesday, June 25
6:00 am – Wake up
6:40 am – Depart Shippensburg – Truck w/trailer, 3rd Shuttle to St. John’s, Carlisle to pick-up Day Hikers and leave the truck w/trailer there for the day.
6:30 – 7:20 am – Enjoy Breakfast.
7:20 am – Start loading Hikers into the shuttles.
7:30 am – Leave for Trailhead.
8:00 am – Arriving Woodrow Row Parking Area, Trail crosses Woodrow Rd. East of Hogshead & Ridge Road Intersection.

Meanwhile: at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 N Hanover St. Carlisle, PA 17013

7:15 am – Day Hikers are parking their cars in public spaces around the church. There is no parking lot.
The two spaces near the Church office are reserved for Clergy and staff. The truck/trailer will be parked there to load only. (If you think it will be easier, we could go a mile down Hanover St. to Walmart and park in an outer section for the day?)

7:20 am – Load Shuttle
7:30 am – Leave for Trailhead.
8:00 am – Arriving Woodrow Road parking area.  This is a very tight space, we are going to need to be vigilant.

Both Groups Together:
8:05 – Overview of the Days Hike and Stopping Points
8:10 – 8:30 – Morning Worship – Afterwards, Group Picture!
Day Hikers will make their lunches at this point. (Week Hikers, you made your lunch back in Shippensburg)
Start staggering groups onto the Appalachian Trail. Hit the Trail at 8:30 am!

Appalachian Camino Start Day 3:   Woodrow Road crosses the Appalachian Trail,
Near Woodrow Rd, South Newton Township, PA

Rest Area/Stopping Point:
Stop 1 – Pine Grove Furnace State Park – 3.5 mi. – Parking Lot East of Park Headquarters
Rest Area/Stopping Point:

Stop 2 – Limekiln Road Intersection – 9.5mi. – Limekiln is a dirt road – Not sure of shape.
1:00 – 1:30 pm – approximately Fill H2O bottles.
End Day 3 Hike: PA Route 34 – 12.6mi. day (Total Camino 33.7 miles) 3:00 pm approximately    Fill H2O bottles.  The End Shuttle will be waiting for you.
Overnight Day 3: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 N Hanover St. Carlisle, PA 17013
Arriving 3:30 pm approximately. (first hikers)
Dinner: 5 pm – The cook of St. John’s after-school and summer program is preparing the evening meal, she may need our help. Feel free to offer yourself in service to them, before and after the meal.
Evening Eucharist: 6:30 pm – Each evening we will have worship and fellowship together in a relaxed, nurturing and loving the atmosphere on the grounds of the Church or in the parish hall depending on the weather and bugs.

  Day 4 – Wednesday, June 26 6:00 am – Wake up 6:45 – 7:20 am – Enjoy Breakfast at St. John’s, Carlisle. Make yourself a lunch, pack your daypack with supplies you need for the trail, fill H2O bottles. 7:20 – Start loading Hikers into the shuttles. 7:30 am – Leave for Trailhead. 8:00 am – Arriving at Route 641, (Trindle Rd.) intersection with the Appalachian Trail Parking Area. Meanwhile:  At the Route 850 Appalachian Trail Parking Lot. 7:15 am – Day Hiker Emily will park her car in the Appalachian Trail Parking Area next to the Truck/trailer for the day. 8:00 am – Arriving at Route 641, Trindle Rd. Parking Area (16miles – 25min) Both Groups Together: 8:05 – Overview of the Days Hike and Stopping Points 8:10 – 8:30 – Morning WorshipAfterwards, Group Picture! Emily Hiker will make her lunch at this point. (Week Hikers, made their lunch back in Carlisle.) Spray yourself up with bug spray, sunscreen, get your hat on, chapstick, etc. Fill H2O bottles. Start staggering groups onto the Appalachian Trail. Hit the Trail at 8:30 am! Appalachian Camino Start Day 4:   Arriving at Route 641, Trindle Rd. Appalachian Trail Parking Area Rest Area/Stopping Point: Stop 1 – Green Hill Road/Bernhisel Road – 5.0mi. – Parking Area along the road. Rest Area/Stopping Point: Stop 2 – Wertzville Road Parking Area – 8.0mi. (Last stop before climbing Mountain to Darlington Shelter.) End Day 4 Hike: PA Route 850 – 12.6mi. day (Total Camino 47.3 miles) Overnight Day 4: The Church of the Nativity & St. Stephens, Newport & Thompsontown 157 South 2nd St., Newport, PA 17074                (717) 567-6514 Arriving 4:00 – 4:30 pm approximately. (first hikers) Dinner: 6:30 pm – Rumor has it we are being treated to ‘Homemade Chicken Pot Pie”, made with a family recipe.  Feel free to lend a hand in service, before and after the meal. Evening Eucharist: 8:00 pm – Each evening we will have worship and fellowship together in a relaxed, nurturing and loving atmosphere on the grounds of the Church or in the parish hall depending on the weather and bugs.
