Discernment Modules

Meeting God’s Call: Discovering Directions for Ministry

Discernment is for the whole Body of Christ.  God calls ALL the baptized into ministry.  When asked who are the ministers of the Church, the Book of Common Prayer says, “The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons.”

But what does it mean to hear God’s call?  How do I know if I have gifts for ministry? How do the sacraments influence our discernment?  And what is mission anyway?

Our exceptional discernment modules explore all these questions and more!

Module I

Meeting God’s Call: Who is the God Who is Calling Us?

Using Bishop Edward Little’s book, Ears to Hear: Recognizing and Responding to God’s Call, this module invites those who are exploring their call to lay or ordained ministry to ask “Who is the God who is calling us?” This module looks at the stories of God’s call to ordinary people, gaining a deeper understanding of their relationship to God and the nature of God’s call.

This module runs for two weeks.

Module II

Meeting God’s Call: A Discovery of Gifts

This module explores the spiritual gifts we are given for ministry. There will be opportunities to tell our stories regarding our gifts and listen to the stories of how others have used their gifts. A gifts inventory will be given to help in discovering our gifts and assessing opportunities for ministry.

This module runs for five to six weeks.

Module III

Meeting God’s Call in Sacrament and Story: Discernment through the Sacrament of Baptism

This module explores vocational call through the baptismal liturgy and The Baptismal Covenant. Themes explored in this module include:

Module V

Meeting God’s Call in Mission: Forward into the Jesus Movement

This module centers on Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s call to us to join the Jesus Movement in a loving, liberating, and life-giving way. It is designed to address the ways in which we understand our call to participate in God’s mission in the world and how that call may be implemented in lay or ordained ministry.
