Episcopal Service Corps – Sycamore House
The Sycamore House is a program connected with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral for young adults (21-29) who want to spend a year living in community and serving locally. We still have a few openings for our 2020-21 cohort, and are accepting applications through Episcopal Service Corps, as well as for individuals who already have a job, but are interested in living in community. We are implementing a COVID-19 plan to continue prioritizing safety for our residents and those they interact with.
The Sycamore House Service Corps offers young people (ages 21-29) a year serving the needs of the Harrisburg community through the Episcopal Church. Corps members explore faith and vocation, while living in community; engaging in the life of the church and city; and serving in area nonprofits that work to address economic, educational, and social needs.
In 2011, plans materialized to become members of the national Episcopal Service Corps. Sycamore House Service Corps came into existence in 2012, by developing internships with local partnering non-profit organizations.
Philosophy of Ministry:
Zacchaeus climbed into the Sycamore tree in order better to see Christ. Yet Jesus called him out of that tree into the community: into engagement and hospitality. Sycamore House Service Corps is a place where individuals can respond to the call to participate in community, with all of its joys and challenges.
In 2005, Sycamore House intentional community was launched as a creative outreach of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in an effort to convert an underused part of the church’s property. The Sycamore House community resides in the Bigler House, a historic building on the campus of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral located on the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, PA.
