Family and Friends Support Group, “It Takes a Village,” to Begin at St. Mary’s, Waynesboro

After realizing that there were no available support groups to help families and friends of those addicted, Tammy Hagan, M.S., parishioner of St. Mary’s, Waynesboro, decided to propose a plan to the Vestry to create one. “It Takes a Village” Support Group will begin June 6th at 1:00 p.m. This support group will meet weekly at St. Mary’s in the Fellowship Hall, located at 112 E. 2nd Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Miss Hagan is a retired drug and alcohol counselor and a former middle school guidance counselor from Chester County, PA, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in both individual and group counseling.

The goal of this group is to provide educational and emotional support to families dealing with addiction. The group setting will help to curb isolation, while offering coping strategies, emotional support and educational services through monthly speakers and sharing.

The Rev. Linda Watkins, Rector of St. Mary’s found that there was a great need for support of families who have loved ones in addiction, and was delighted when Miss Hagan approached her with the idea. Rev. Watkins then encouraged her to present the idea to the Vestry. Watkins serves on the Province III Opioid Crisis Task Force, which represents 13 Episcopal Dioceses including Central PA. Rev. Watkins is hopeful and says, “This is a tribute to Tammy’s initiative and St. Mary’s hospitality and generosity to support their community.”
