The Episcopal Church’s long struggle over the full inclusion of sexual minorities—and the harm caused by exclusion—calls for a return to Scripture with fresh urgency and greater care. Across the Old Testament, this course will examine key moments where Scripture itself challenges and reinterprets assumptions about holiness, covenant membership, and communal identity, with particular attention to the inclusion of outsiders within Israel and developments in purity and holiness frameworks. We will trace a recurring biblical pattern in which God’s people come to recognize that God’s grace extends beyond previously accepted boundaries and will consider how this pattern informs the Church’s ongoing work for the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons today.
