Souls Together: A Monthly Gathering for Prayer and Conversation

June 5 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In these challenging and divisive times, how do we faithfully respond as Episcopalians? How do we best pray for our leaders and for the health of our nation? How do we live into the Baptismal Covenant in everyday life?

Join Bishop Scanlan and selected guests on the first Thursday of each month as we explore these questions. Participants will share prayer concerns, engage faith seeking understanding, explore their call to Gospel Justice, and build strength in Christian fellowship.

Each session will begin with an introduction of that month’s topic and guidelines for respectful engagement. This conversation is intended to be non-partisan, creating a safe space for dialogue across the breadth of understanding of issues in our world today.

And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

“Identity:” Who do you say that I am?

In beginning to explore our faithful response to the events in our world today, it is important to begin by understanding our identity. Who are we? How does who we are influence what we do? When do different aspects of our identity come into conflict with each other and what determines our response?

Bishop Scanlan will welcome guests the Rev. Deacon Jan Brown, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist serving at St. Andrew’s, York, and the Rev. Kevin Barron, a 35-year Penn State Administrator who is a priest of this diocese, theologian, and educator.

They will discuss the multiple facets of our identity, how identity is formed, and the role it plays in our response to world events. We will share a time of discussion and prayer, and welcome all to join us in our first gathering of Souls Together.
