Bishop Scanlan’s Election Letter

Feast of All Saints
1 November 2020

Dear Members of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania,

On this day in which we celebrate the saints of the Church- those who have modeled for us “virtuous and godly living” (BCP 245)- let us remember our own striving to “lead lives worthy of the calling to which God has called each one of us.” (Ephesians 4: 1). The responsibility of our baptismal vows compels us to strive continually, with God’s help, towards bringing God’s Kingdom to fruition- a kingdom marked by justice, compassion and peace.

In this election season, we have been tested to keep focused on a godly path that is righteous and honorable. The debasement that our contentious national election has wrought is discouraging at its best, and dangerous at its worst. The power of evil has been palpable in our country in these days; racist assaults, violent rhetoric, and systemic oppression have proliferated as the election draws closer, and as the grip of a deadly pandemic has squeezed us even tighter.

This is not the time to lose hope. This is the time to hold fast to the virtues of our country- freedom, justice and liberty- and to raise up the truth of our faith that keeps drawing us forward, seeking love and wholeness.

“…Take hold of the hope set before us (so that we) may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”(Hebrews 6: 18b, 19)

Many of us have already cast our votes. Others will go, faithfully, to the polls on Tuesday. It is not clear when we will know the outcome of the election, and the tension of not knowing may reach a breaking point causing civil distress and discord. I pray for your safety in these days ahead and I bid your caution. I also bid your continued prayers- for the leaders of our nation, for a safe and just election, and for the health of our country and our world.

There are several prayer vigils and meetings taking place this week. Two that I commend to you on a diocesan level are the Deacon’s “All Souls to the Polls” Prayer Vigil on Monday night, November 2nd from 6-9 PM and our cathedral’s “Prayers of Light and Hope” on the evening of Election Day, November 3rd from 7-8:30 PM. I do hope that you will find what you need in your own parish church or through these resources.

May God bless you, guide you and keep you.

In the Way of Love,
The Rt. Rev. Audrey C. Scanlan
XI Bishop
