“Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” – Matthew 25:35-36
“Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’” – John 21:15
“Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.” – Proverbs 22:9
The longest-ever government shutdown officially ended on November 13, when the federal government reopened. But for the 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) for their food needs, things are not yet back to normal. The last six weeks have brought uncertainty, delays, and partial payments, many of which will take time to resolve depending on which state recipients live in. One in eight American families rely on SNAP.
In the Gospels, Jesus makes it crystal clear how his followers are to treat the hungry. We feed them. Full stop. In response to the recent crisis — and to the ever-increasing cost of food nationwide — below is a list of food resources throughout the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and the Diocese of Bethlehem. Please share it widely and consider donating or volunteering as churches and non-profits respond to the call to love our neighbors and help those in need.
Central PA Food Bank Resource Map allows you to search by ZIP code for the nearest food resources. You can also call 211 to find local resources.
